Bug ID 2259777: Spurious 'Config error: Error updating categories' messages are logged by each TMM during boot.

Last Modified: Oct 16, 2026

Affected Product(s):
BIG-IP None(all modules)

Fixed In:
21.1.0.3, 17.5.1.10, 17.1.3.6

Opened: Mar 30, 2026

Severity: 4-Minor

Symptoms

On every TMM start, /var/log/ltm contains: err tmm[<pid>]: 01010007:3: Config error: Error updating categories in urlcat err tmm[<pid>]: 01010007:3: Config error: Error updating categories in urlcat items err tmm[<pid>]: 01010007:3: Config error: Error updating categories in classification The triplet repeats twice per TMM and is logged by every TMM instance.

Impact

This issue results in cosmetic log noise only and may trigger monitoring systems that parse /var/log/ltm for error-severity or 'Config error' strings. It does not affect URL categorization, filtering, classification, or traffic processing.

Conditions

- Install BIG-IP 17.1.3.1. - Occurs with any provisioning or licensing combination (reproducible with LTM-only). - The issue arises during every TMM start, including boot, upgrade, or upon running bigstart restart tmm.
