Bug ID 2389341: UCS save fails for large iAppsLX packages due to rpmbuild timeout causing persistent IllegalStateException

Last Modified: Oct 16, 2026

Affected Product(s):
BIG-IP TMOS(all modules)

Fixed In:
21.1.0.3, 17.5.1.10, 17.1.3.6

Opened: Jul 11, 2026

Severity: 3-Major

Symptoms

tmsh save sys UCS completes, but one or more iAppsLX packages are missing from RPMS.save/ inside the UCS archive The following errors appear in /var/log/ltm during UCS save: err iAppsLX_save_pre[19798]: Failed task: /shared/iapp/build-package/f9405734-9ca2-45f7-ad4c-9164c277bddb: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Invalid state in the chain of requests - RPM_BUILD_FAILED. err iAppsLX_save_pre: Failed to get getRPM build response within timeout for <package-name> err iAppsLX_save_pre[19798]: Failed to get getRPM build response within timeout for f5-service-discovery

Impact

Large iAppsLX packages are not included in the UCS archive. The failure is silent from a UCS perspective, as the UCS is created successfully but is incomplete

Conditions

One or more large iAppsLX packages are installed (e.g., f5-service-discovery, f5-telemetry — 100MB+) The rpmbuild for those packages exceeds the configured iapplxrpm.timeout (default: 60 seconds), and the build fails and hits an IllegalStateException immediately

Workaround

Increasing the iapplxrpm timeout value allows saving the file without getting a timeout failure tmsh modify sys db iapplxrpm.timeout value 600 bigstart restart restjavad

Fix Information

- Hard timeout set to IAPPLXRPM_TIMEOUT_SEC_MAXIMUM (600s) so large packages have sufficient time to build, and exits after build succeeds. - Stall detector added — cancels rpmbuild only if filesystem activity stops growing for 90s (distinguishes a genuinely hung build from a slow but progressing one) RPM_BUILD_FAILED case added to processStep() — calls failTask() cleanly instead of throwing IllegalStateException FAILED tasks skipped in duplicate check — next save triggers a fresh build instead of returning the stale failure
