Bug ID 2501501: Datasync generator liveness check can start duplicate generators, leading to memory pressure

Last Modified: Oct 12, 2026

Affected Product(s):
BIG-IP ASM(all modules)

Known Affected Versions:
17.1.3, 17.1.3.1, 17.1.3.2, 17.1.3.4, 17.1.3.5

Opened: Sep 02, 2026

Severity: 3-Major

Symptoms

Host memory usage grows over time (typically on standby), and multiple datasync generator and Java compiler processes may be observed. In severe cases, memory and swap are exhausted, triggering the Linux OOM killer and requiring a reboot to recover

Impact

A replacement generator may be started while the original is still running. Over time, this can accumulate Java compiler processes and increase host memory use, potentially causing swap exhaustion, OOM events, and reduced stability until reboot

Conditions

A system running ASM datasync where the generator liveness check transiently misreads a running generator's command line (for example, during process startup), causing a live generator to be treated as missing

Workaround

A reboot restores normal memory usage
