Symptoms

The clusterd daemon may log one or more 'blade X powered DOWN' messages, followed by one or more 'blade X powered up' messages approximately one second later, with no other messages logged indicating any other issues with the cluster members. Example messages: Dec 31 09:01:37 slot7/... warning clusterd[7569]: 013a0009:4: Blade 7: blade 5 powered DOWN. Dec 31 09:01:37 slot7/... warning clusterd[7569]: 013a0009:4: Blade 7: blade 6 powered DOWN. Dec 31 09:01:37 slot7/... warning clusterd[7569]: 013a0009:4: Blade 7: blade 7 powered DOWN. Dec 31 09:01:38 slot7/... notice clusterd[7569]: 013a0010:5: Blade 7: blade 5 powered up. Dec 31 09:01:38 slot7/... notice clusterd[7569]: 013a0010:5: Blade 7: blade 6 powered up. In this case, these messages indicate a transient loss of accurate blade power and/or presence reporting over the chassis management backplane, which was quickly restored. The BIG-IP cluster management daemon (clusterd) uses additional channels of communication to verify cluster member state, and does not take action affecting the cluster state in response to such transient conditions.

Impact

In the absence of other messages indicating a change in the cluster or member status, these messages indicate a transient loss of accurate blade power and/or presence reporting over the chassis management backplane, which was quickly restored. The BIG-IP cluster management daemon (clusterd) does not take action affecting the cluster state in response to such transient conditions. These cosmetic errors are safe to ignore: warning clusterd[7569]: 013a0009:4: Blade 7: blade 5 powered DOWN.

Conditions

This may occur rarely and intermittently when affected versions of BIG-IP are running on VIPRION 4000-series blades in VIPRION 4000-series chassis: VIPRION B4100 (PB100), B4200 (PB200), or B4300 blades. VIPRION C4400, C4480, or C4800 chassis.

Workaround

None.

Fix Information

The system no longer reports the following messages during blade power-up and power-down operations: warning clusterd[7569]: 013a0009:4: Blade 7: blade 5 powered DOWN.
