Bug ID 969533: Edge Client configured for Always Connected mode may fail to work with WiFi captive portal

Last Modified: Nov 11, 2023

Affected Product(s):
APM-Clients APM(all modules)

Opened: Dec 04, 2020

Severity: 2-Critical

Symptoms

When the Edge Client is configured for Always Connected mode, clients will continuously try to connect and can block internet access to sites outside of an admin-defined allow list while the VPN is disconnected. In certain conditions, the Edge Client may inadvertently block the authentication page of wi-fi captive portals. This results in the user being unable to successfully complete captive portal authentication after a captive portal timeout. Because vendors implement WiFi captive portals in different ways, this problem may only occur at certain hotspots.

Impact

End users are locked out of captive portal and cannot authenticate to begin a WiFi internet session.

Conditions

Using Always Connected mode in Edge Client 7.2.1 or 7.1.9 on MacOS Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur. Traveling to a hotspot with certain types of captive portals.

Workaround

Client becomes locked out in captive portal environment if Edge Client is in Always Connected mode
