Symptoms

Multiple updatecheck and 'rpm -qf' processes running simultaneously. Updatecheck is not functional

Impact

Due to that 'rpm -qf' command hangs. This causes multiple updatecheck and 'rpm -qf' processes. High CPU and memory usage. The most likely explanation is that rpmdb has gotten corrupted.

Conditions

Updatecheck is run periodically via a cronjob. Updatecheck runs 'rpm -qf' command.

Workaround

To rebuild rpmdb: 1. Halt all running updatecheck and 'rpm -qf' processes. 2. Run these commands: rm /var/lib/rpm/__db* rpm --rebuilddb
